The fabled Chilcotin region of British Columbia is a vast sprawl of mountains and valleys, rivers and streams, glaciers and forest, punctuated by huge open grasslands, the latter which first drew cattlemen to the area.
Then followed well over a century of growing occupation by white settlers, pushing aside the First Nation’s inhabitants, soon confining them to reserves when once they roamed freely over the entire region, hunting and fishing as required.
Only recently have actions been taken to redress the historical wrongs, beginning with a Supreme Court of Canada decision which granted aboriginal land title covering a substantial portion, including the Nemaiah Valley, to the Tsilqot’in Nation. The area also includes some the Ts’ilʔos Provincial Park (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/tsilos/ ).
Elkin Creek Guest Ranch in the Nemaiah Valley hosted a group of BLPG members for the better part of a week in August 2019. The ranch became our base as we explored and photographed in this beautiful area of BC. The roads are rough but the scenery makes up for the effort.
