The three photos below, of a Sandhill Crane, need some explanation.  They were taken with a Nikon D800E, a camera which captures 36.3 megapixels in each image.  What does that mean?  One thing it means is that small areas of a photo can be blown up quite large.  Case in point, this photo:

As can be seen from the photo, the Sandhill crane is hard to see.  But now look what happens when Larry crops the photo to emphasize just the head and neck of the crane (and to do some special effects):

This is a “painterly” treatment of the crop.  Another approach is:

The results are striking.  And the effectiveness of Larry’s approach is due in no small measure to the huge number of pixels present in the original image.
